Introduction

Scholars, practitioners and public administrations recognize that technology has transformed and will continue to transform the way human beings work, live, and learn. In particular, information technology (IT) has changed the way we do business. A huge number of opportunities are emerging to create new firms based on this technology. The technology promotes opportunities for future entrepreneurs who will create and guide their organizations in the conversion of technical ideas into new businesses, products, services, and solutions. Creation of technology-based organizations requires an understanding of the interaction of technology with all aspects of the organization to build and maintain sustainable competitive advantages.

One form of IT entrepreneurship (although not the only one) involves using the Internet to conduct business, promote business or perform entrepreneurship. Nevertheless, while much of the press has been interested in the revolution in e-commerce, the overall e-business opportunities are more numerous and the opportunities in entrepreneurship in IT are more numerous still.

The Overall Objective of the Book

The topic of entrepreneurship in combination with IT leads to a multidisciplinary book with a special emphasis on technological entrepreneurship in the IT field. This book will focus on the process of discovering, creating and turning IT-based opportunities into new products and services in existing organizations (corporate entrepreneurship) and new ventures. The way to illustrate this to readers of this book will be through real-life cases of entrepreneurship using IT.

The Target Audience

This book is expected to be an important guide for managers and senior managers searching for innovative sources of competitive advantages through IT.

In addition, it should prove interesting for those entrepreneurs thinking about creating a new firm but lacking others’ successful experiences. This book should be a useful tool for entrepreneurs looking for IT opportunities, as it will prove to be a guide for them to plan and implement their business projects. Potential entrepreneurs will find practical recommendations for the start-up phase and key factors for success.

It will also be relevant to consultants and students interested in strategic and IT issues.

Finally, this book will be a resource for students and researchers in business and management studies, as a book for successfully governing new ventures based on IT opportunities.
