SECOND WORLD CONGRESS ON ALLELOPATHY
Critical Analysis & Future Prospects
August 9-13, 1999
Lakehead University. Thunder Bay, Ontario. CANADA P7B 5E1

..................

While the First World Congress of the IAS discussed the vision of this emerging discipline (Allelopathy: a Science for the Future) the Second World Congress aims for a critical analysis of the past and present contributions and future prospects of Allelopathy as a science. In spite of a significant increase of interest in allelopathy in recent years, inspiration about their subjects and an unwavering belief in its importance, allelopathy scientists often seem to be in a state of self-doubt about the "real progress" in allelopathy as a science.

Allelopathy refers to any process involving secondary metabolites of plant, fungal and microbial origin that influence growth and development of other plants and microbes. Research in allelopathy includes production, accumulation, degradation and function of secondary metabolises, and their significance in natural and seminatural ecosystems. Biological control of undesirable plants and microbes in agricultural, forestry and ecological systems is part of the objectives.

lnternational Allelopathy Society (IAS) was founded in 1995 at a meeting in New Delhi, India with over 200 scientists coming from 19 countries. Researchers and practitioners in agriculture, forestry, horticulture, landscape ecologists, natural product chemistry, plant physiology biochemistry, ecology, weed science, microbiology, soil science were the 31 founding members of this association.

Currently public disatisfaction in herbicide and pesticide use in agriculture and forestry has opened up an exciting opportunity for allelopathy scientists in developing biological controls using allelopathy principles. While the traditional crop management following allelopathic principles has been an age-old practice in the Old World, the development of new agricultural and biological products have started in the New World with biocontrol agents. The second IAS Congress will provide a platform to discuss some of the controversial methodological aspects together with the recent findings on allelopathy. Your papers or posters should report results of substantially completed recent findings and should discuss novel and critical appraisals of specific topic of interest.

Proposed Topics

1. Allelopathy in natural ecosystems.

2. Allelopathy in agriculture and forestry.

3. Methods of studying allelopathy.

4. Physiology and biochemistry of allelopathic infractions.

5. Useful allelochemicals: biological control agents and pharmaceuticals.

6. Present status and future prospects of Allelopathy.

7. Allelopathy: a crossfire discussion.

8. Others (suggested).

Scientific Program & Publication. The program will include invited and keynote speakers as well as oral and poster presentations. Papers presented will appear in the Conference Proceedings following peer review.

Lakehead University is the venue of the Second World Congress on Allelopathy. Located in the City of Thunder Bay by Lake Superior, it is a relatively new University with all modern amenities. The University campus is situated on 150 hectors of scenic land beside Lake Tamblyn. The Macintyre River runs through the campus creating a beautiful back drop for the residence complexes. The City of Thunder Bay is accessible by road (Trans Canada Hwy.) and air, and is serviced by the two major airlines, Air Canada and Canadian. With a population of 150,000 Thunder Bay offers big city fun with the small town atmosphere. The surrounding area has numerous natural attractions, Ouimet Canyon, Legendary Sleeping Giant, Kakabeka Fails, Old Fort William, Lake Superior Coast Line and of course the city night life. Boreal forest is on three sides of the city.
